Nothing says summer fun like a fair! Each year when the weather turns warm and the sun shines bright, Chenango County is home to two fantastic fairs that feature local agriculture, delicious food, competitions, midway rides and games, and live entertainment. And if you still haven’t had enough, we’re just a short drive to other great fairs that you won’t want to miss.
The largest is the Chenango County Fair, held at the Chenango County Fairgrounds in Norwich. Lasting six days (August 10-14, 2022), the County Fair celebrates the agricultural industry that has such a strong history in Chenango County and continues to thrive to this day. Cows, goats, horses and small animals are all proudly exhibited by their owners, while produce, plants and flowers, and dairy products are presented, too.
The 175th year will be sure to excite attendees with special events such as equestrian competitions, 4-H livestock shows and case building, rodeo, the always-popular demolition derby, and live concerts from regionally–and nationally–known musical performers.
The fair’s classic midway is full of games of chance and thrilling carnival rides. Vendors fill the air with the enticing smells of fried foods and other gourmet delights. Drawing guests from throughout the region, the Chenango County Fair is a feast for the senses and offers entertainment from the time the gates open until the fireworks show at night.
Southeast of Norwich lies Afton, where you can find the 133-year old Afton Fair, held this year from July 7 – 10, 2022 at the Afton Driving Park. A favorite event of locals, the Afton Fair features an exhibition hall, horse show, harness racing, youth dairy show, and small animal show. Traditional fair foods and midway rides and games can’t be missed. Dirt track racing, tractor pulls, a demolition derby, and music performances on the entertainment stage round out the fun and excitement available over the course of four days.
Looking for even more tractor pulls, fried dough, and spins on The Scrambler? Then check out these neighboring fairs:
- The 147th Annual Broome County Fair takes place July 26 – 31 in Whitney Point.
- The Otsego County Fair is held in Morris from August 2 – 7.
- Head to Syracuse for The Great New York State Fair, August 24 – September 5.
Fairs are one of the many ways to have fun in Chenango County and Central New York. Be a part of this classic American summer tradition… you’ll make memories to last a lifetime!
