Apples are ripe for picking at Chapman’s Orchard

You can feel it in the air. Cool days are coming, and the apples at Chapman’s Orchard in Oxford, N.Y., are crisp, juicy and waiting for you to visit and pluck them from the branches.

The family fun begins today (Aug. 28), when the orchard at 1245 County Road 4 in Oxford opens for the U Pick apple season. More than 15 varieties of apples grow in the orchard and owner Jim Crowell says early varieties such as Gala, Honeycrisp and McIntosh look “quite good.”

Other varieties continue to ripen through the end of October. You’ll find popular varieties, including Macoun and Golden Delicious as well as heirloom apples you won’t find in the grocery store. Think Albemarle Pippins and Esopus Spitzenburgs, the favorite apple of Thomas Jefferson.

Each has a unique character. Consult Chapman’s website to explore which apples are perfect for pies, making cider or eating fresh.

The Chapman’s Orchard was born out of Crowell’s desire to see children share the enjoyment he found in the activity as a boy.

“I remember picking applies with my family as a child,” he said. “It was a wonderful experience.”

Now it’s open for all to visit, a scenic 45-minute ride from Binghamton or an hour from Syracuse.

Crowell keeps sturdy one-peck bags for those who need them. And most trees are short enough that adults can the top apples without extra equipment. The level, weed-free walkways among the trees are easy for wheelchair users, who are invited to drive up to the orchard’s main gate for access.

The orchard also offers bags of already-picked apples for those who want fresh fruit on the go.

When you’re finished harvesting your own apples, browse Chapman’s Orchard’s farm-fresh produce and, on the weekends, mouthwatering baked goods.

“The cinnamon rolls are very popular,” Crowell says.

To make the most of your adventure, take a break for a bite to eat in Oxford’s nearby downtown. Go for pizza and other Italian favorites at Roma Pizzeria and Restaurant, or try Stadium Sports Bar and Grill for its 12-ounce burger, wings and other pub specialties. For classic American diner fare, visit Hoppies Café.

When you’re done, browse the local shops or stop by the Oxford Memorial Library in the handsome and historic Federalist-style Theodore Burr House from the 1810s. Check the library’s calendar for kids’ events.

Whatever you choose, the charming town of Oxford and Chapman’s Orchard offer many ways to turn apple-picking into a full day of activities, and a perfect way to slow down and enjoy the season.
